Training guide
A guide to the CyberOps Associate course from Cisco Networking Academy: content, time, delivery and the exam it prepares for.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on Cisco Networking Academy course overviews
The Cisco CyberOps Associate course trains learners for entry-level security analyst work in a Security Operations Centre. It is a hands-on, career-focused course from Cisco Networking Academy.
The old page called it a free course. Cisco and partner academies describe it as instructor-led, so each academy sets its own fee. This guide explains the content and the exam behind it.
| Provider | Cisco Networking Academy, taught by partner academies |
| Level | Intermediate. Basic networking and security knowledge helps. |
| Delivery | Instructor-led, usually with an academy |
| Estimated time | About 70 to 72 hours |
| Structure | 28 modules and 46 hands-on labs |
| Exam it aligns to | 200-201 CBROPS, a separate exam |
| Cost | Set by the teaching academy. The exam is paid separately. |
The course introduces the skills to monitor, detect, investigate and respond to security events. It covers cybercrime, insider threats and other risks organisations face.
Cisco stresses practical work. You use common open-source tools to study attacks and learn basic incident response.
The course has 28 modules. Cisco lists 46 labs and more than 110 interactive activities, videos and quizzes. Six Packet Tracer activities are included.
Topics include operating systems, network protocols, network security principles and cryptography.
Descriptions from academies show an instructor-led course. Fees vary a lot between providers. A UK college lists a price in pounds, while another academy lists a local-currency fee.
Ask each academy for the current fee. Ask what it includes.
The course aligns with the Cisco Certified CyberOps Associate certification. You must pass the 200-201 CBROPS exam to earn it.
The exam covers security concepts, monitoring, host-based analysis, network intrusion analysis and security policies. It is paid and taken at a Pearson VUE centre.
One academy page states that scoring 70 per cent on the final course exam earns a 50 per cent discount from Cisco toward the exam. Confirm this with your academy and with Cisco before you rely on it.
It suits IT students and professionals who want a security operations career. Basic networking skills help a lot.
Beginners may want Introduction to Cybersecurity first. Then take Networking Basics before this course.
Plan about eight weeks if you can give ten hours a week. Do the labs on the day you read each module.
Keep a log of tools and what each one shows. In an interview, you can talk about real examples.
Roles include SOC analyst, security analyst and incident responder at entry level. Many employers ask for hands-on proof.
Add the course and the year to your Europass CV. If you pass the exam, list the certification number.
Expect to work with log files, packet captures and alert data. You learn to read what normal traffic looks like first. Only then can you spot the strange events.
Learners also practise writing short incident notes. Clear notes matter in a real operations centre.
Do not start without basic networking knowledge. Many modules assume you know ports, protocols and addressing.
Do not rely on memory alone for the exam. Practise with the labs and with sample questions from the official exam page.
Do not describe yourself as an experienced analyst after a course. Say you completed a hands-on programme.
Ask whether you get a personal tutor or a live class. Ask how long you keep access to materials.
Ask whether the exam voucher or discount is part of the fee.
At ten hours a week, the course takes about seven weeks. Add time for the exam if you plan to book it.
Block fixed study slots and protect them. Lab work needs unbroken time, so avoid squeezing it into short breaks.
Keep screenshots of your lab results, with the sensitive details removed. Save your digital badge and your final exam score.
These are useful when a recruiter asks what you did in the course.
Listings show an instructor-led course with fees set by each academy. Check the current details.
Cisco-related listings show about 70 to 72 hours.
No. You must pass the 200-201 CBROPS exam.
