Training guide
A guide to Python Essentials 1 from Cisco Networking Academy and the Python Institute: topics, time, labs and the PCEP exam.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on Cisco Networking Academy course material and Python Institute pages
Cisco Python Essentials 1 is the first course in a two-course Python series. It was developed with the Python Institute. It teaches programming from the start, so you do not need coding experience.
The old page called it a free Python course. Free self-paced access is listed on Skills for All and NetAcad. This guide explains the length, the labs and the PCEP exam.
| Provider | Cisco Networking Academy, with the Python Institute (OpenEDG) |
| Level | Beginner, no prerequisites |
| Delivery | Self-paced or instructor-led |
| Estimated time | About 30 hours on Cisco’s overview |
| Structure | 4 modules and 30 practice labs |
| Aligned exam | PCEP, Certified Entry-Level Python Programmer |
| Cost | Self-paced access is listed as free. The exam is separate. |
The course covers data types, variables, input and output, control flow and functions. It also introduces how to handle errors.
You write small programs from the first module. The labs build habits that carry into later courses.
Cisco’s overview lists four modules and 30 practice labs. Each module ends with a test.
An integrated tool lets you write and run code in the browser, so you do not need to install anything at first.
Cisco’s overview estimates about 30 hours. The Python Institute’s study page lists 42 hours, with a suggested seven hours a week.
Different versions and teaching modes explain the gap. Use the larger figure if you are new to programming.
The Python Institute lists its Python Essentials courses as free. Cisco notes that self-paced classes on NetAcad and Skills for All are free for some courses.
The PCEP exam is not part of the free course. Check the exam price with the Python Institute.
PCEP stands for Certified Entry-Level Python Programmer. It tests basic coding tasks such as data types, loops and functions.
It is the first step toward PCAP, the associate-level certification. You do not need it to take the course.
It suits school leavers, career changers and IT staff who want to automate small tasks. Networking learners also use Python for scripts.
If you want data work later, Python Essentials 1 is a sound base.
Write code every day, even ten lines. Type each example rather than copy it.
After each module, build one tiny program of your own, such as a unit converter.
Do not only read the examples. You learn by running and breaking code.
Do not skip the error-handling lessons. Real programs need them.
Do not rush to Python Essentials 2 before you can solve the labs without hints.
Move to Python Essentials 2 for more advanced work. Then consider the PCAP exam.
Add a small project to a public code page. Employers like to see working code.
Entry roles include junior developer, test assistant and IT automation assistant. Add the course and the year to your Europass CV.
List the PCEP certification only if you pass the exam.
After module three, build a tiny quiz program. It asks three questions, checks the answers and prints a score. This uses variables, input, conditions and functions.
Then add one improvement each day, such as a retry option. Small steps build confidence.
Do I want to take the PCEP exam? If yes, check its price and rules on the Python Institute site.
Do I prefer a class or self-study? Both are listed, and fees differ.
Which version am I joining? Check the hours and the module list on the page.
Save your digital badge link and your lab files. Keep a folder of the programs you wrote with a short note on each.
Update your profile with the course name, the version and the year.
Thirty hours is about five weeks at six hours a week. The Python Institute’s 42 hours is about seven weeks.
Pick the longer plan if you are new. You can always finish early.
Self-paced access is listed as free. The PCEP exam is separate.
