Training guide
A plain guide to Cybersecurity Fundamentals from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RITx) on edX.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on RIT and edX course information and third-party course listings
RIT Cybersecurity Fundamentals on edX is a course from the Rochester Institute of Technology, delivered on edX. The old page called it a “RutgersX” beginner course. That is wrong. The institution is RIT, and its edX label is RITx.
Sources disagree on the level. RIT’s own page says Entry Level. Several course listings say Advanced. This guide explains why that matters and how to decide if it suits you.
It also lists the units, the time you may need and how to describe the course on a CV.
| Institution | Rochester Institute of Technology (RITx) on edX |
| Length | 8 weeks, according to RIT and edX listings |
| Effort | 10 to 12 hours a week in some listings |
| Level | Entry Level on the RIT page; Advanced in some listings |
| Certificate | Paid verified certificate in listings; audit access is free |
| Part of | RITx Cybersecurity MicroMasters, according to listings |
Rutgers and RIT are different universities. The course is by RIT, and the edX code begins with RITx.
Use the correct name on your CV. A wrong name looks careless to a recruiter.
Check the edX page for the current name, because course catalogues change.
RIT’s course page states Entry Level. Several third-party listings state Advanced, which comes from the older edX label.
A pace of 10 to 12 hours a week suggests real effort. Even an entry course can feel hard if networking is new to you.
Read the first unit before you decide. It shows how much background you need.
RIT lists three outcomes. You explain network and system administration basics. You describe information assurance, including confidentiality, integrity and availability.
You also understand basic cryptography. A skills list on the RIT page adds network security, network configuration and cyber defence.
Older listings show units on concepts, cryptography, networking, systems administration, detection and prevention, and malware and forensics.
Listings show 8 weeks. At 10 to 12 hours a week, expect about 80 to 100 hours.
One reviewer on a course site said the course took 1 to 4 hours a week. Treat that as a minimum, not a plan.
Plan a steady weekly slot. Missing two weeks in a row makes the networking units harder.
Listings describe a free audit track and a paid verified certificate. One listing shows a price of 399 US dollars. Prices change, so check edX.
Audit access gives you the learning. A verified certificate gives you a shareable credential.
Decide whether a certificate matters to your plan before you pay.
Set up a home lab on a spare computer or a virtual machine. Practise basic network settings.
Write a one-page summary of the confidentiality, integrity and availability idea, using a bank as an example.
Read a public security advisory and describe the threat in plain words.
A course like this is a first step. Entry roles such as IT support or junior analyst often ask for practical skills too.
Combine it with hands-on practice. Many learners follow it with a vendor-neutral certification.
Do not present it as a professional qualification. Describe it as university-level online training.
Practise only on systems you own or have permission to test. Unauthorised testing can be illegal.
Use a virtual machine for experiments. Keep it separate from your personal files.
Read your country’s rules on computer misuse before you try any tool.
Do I know enough about networks to follow a unit on routing?
Can I give ten hours a week for eight weeks?
Do I need the paid certificate, or is audit access enough?
Roles include IT support, junior security analyst and SOC trainee.
Add the course to your Europass CV, with RITx as the provider and the year you finished.
The course does not give a right to work. Check national rules if you need a visa.
