Training guide
A plain guide to the IBM AI Engineering Certificate: 13 courses, the tools you practise, the time it takes and who should start.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on the official Coursera professional certificate page
The IBM AI Engineering Certificate is an online programme for people who want to build machine learning systems. IBM created it and Coursera hosts it. It is longer and more technical than a first course.
This guide explains what the programme covers and who it suits. It also shows how to use it in a job search in Europe. The facts come from the Coursera page. Check that page for the latest course list.
| Provider | IBM, delivered on Coursera |
| Level | Intermediate |
| Format | Professional Certificate, 13 courses |
| Suggested pace | About 4 months at 10 hours a week |
| Main tools | Python, scikit-learn and PyTorch |
| Cost | Included with Coursera Plus. Check current prices. |
Coursera says you apply core machine learning methods such as regression, classification, clustering and dimensionality reduction. You use Python and the scikit-learn library.
Later courses move to deep learning. The page says you build, train and evaluate PyTorch models that you can show in a portfolio. It also lists transformer models for sequence and time series prediction.
The first course is about 20 hours and covers machine learning basics. Others run from about 15 to 23 hours. A few are shorter, and one listing shows only 4 hours.
The path moves from simple models to neural networks. Expect to spend more time on the later, technical courses.
Coursera lists the level as intermediate. You should be able to write basic Python and read simple code before you start. Some comfort with maths helps, especially averages, graphs and basic algebra.
If you have never coded, take a beginner Python course first. You will enjoy this programme more.
Models are easier to judge when you can see them. For each project, write a short note on the data, the method and the result. Include one chart that explains your finding.
Be honest about limits. If a model works well only on one dataset, say so. Employers like clear and careful explanations.
Spend the first month on the basics and revisit any maths you find hard. In the middle months, practise each method on a small dataset of your own.
Use the final month for a project that combines two techniques. Keep it small enough to finish.
Do not rely on screenshots of results. Keep your code and notes.
Do not skip data cleaning. Most real work happens before the model.
Do not describe yourself as an AI engineer on the strength of a certificate alone.
The programme suits developers, analysts and graduates who already code a little. It also suits people who finished a beginner data course and want to go deeper.
It may be too demanding for a complete beginner.
AI and machine learning roles appear in many European cities. Titles include machine learning engineer, junior data scientist and AI developer.
Employers often ask for Python, version control and clear writing. Add those to your CV where you have real practice.
The certificate does not give a right to work. Check national visa rules if needed.
Plan ten hours a week. Use four for lessons, four for coding practice and two for notes and review.
Re-run each notebook from the top once a week. This catches errors and shows you how the pieces fit.
Write a short summary after each course. Explain one method as if to a friend who has never coded.
Can you already write simple Python? Coursera lists the level as intermediate, so some experience helps.
Do you want to build models, or only understand them? A shorter introduction may fit the second goal.
Job ads for machine learning roles often mention Python, data handling and clear communication. Many also ask for experience with version control and testing.
The programme gives you practice with the first. You must build the others through projects. Add a short results section to each project, so a reader sees what you achieved.
Do not forget soft skills. Being able to explain a model to a manager is as valuable as building it.
The current Coursera page lists 13.

No. Hiring depends on the employer and your work.
Titles to search for include machine learning engineer, junior data scientist and AI developer. Search current vacancies on the EURES portal.
