Work permits
How non-EU professionals can approach Germany jobs through the EU Blue Card, with the 2026 salary thresholds and settlement rules published by the German government.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026
Germany jobs for foreigners attract skilled workers from around the world. The official shortage list covers STEM, medicine, nursing and teaching, among others. A job offer is the starting point for almost every work route.
This guide explains one route in detail, the EU Blue Card. It uses the German government portal Make it in Germany. Other routes exist, so treat this as a starting map and not a full legal answer.
| Main route covered | EU Blue Card under Section 18g of the Residence Act |
| Standard salary threshold | At least €50,700 gross a year (2026) |
| Lower threshold | At least €45,934.20 a year for shortage occupations, new graduates and some IT specialists |
| Minimum job offer | At least six months, matching your qualification |
| Maximum validity | Four years, then extension if conditions are met |
| Official portal | Make it in Germany, run by the Federal Government |
For the Blue Card, you need a specific job offer from a company in Germany. The offer must run for at least six months. The job must match your qualification.
If your profession is regulated, such as medicine, you need the licence to practise or must be on track to get it when you apply for the visa.
This is why searching for a real vacancy comes first. A visa cannot be planned without an employer.
You need a German degree or a foreign degree that is comparable to a German one. If you have no traditional degree, you may still qualify with a tertiary-level qualification that took at least three years.
In Germany this qualification must correspond to level 6 of the European Qualifications Framework. Master craftsperson training is one example given by the portal.
Check recognition early. The portal has a recognition section that explains how to have a foreign qualification assessed.
The Federal Ministry of the Interior sets the thresholds every year. For 2026 the portal gives these figures.
The shortage list includes academic STEM professionals, doctors, dentists, pharmacists, veterinarians, nurses and teachers. It also includes several management groups. The portal links to the full list.
If your job is on the shortage list, the lower salary threshold applies. That can make a real difference for a first job.
Approval from the Federal Employment Agency is part of the process for these cases. Ask your employer who will handle it.
Do not assume your job title is on the list. Compare the exact occupation with the official list before you plan around the lower figure.
The Blue Card is issued for the length of your contract plus six months. It is valid for a maximum of four years. You can extend it in Germany if you still meet the conditions.
Holders can apply for a settlement permit after 27 months with German at level A1. With level B1, the permit can come after 21 months.
Family members can join you. The portal has a separate family reunification section with the rules.
You can change employer with a valid Blue Card. If you change jobs within the first year, you must tell your local foreigners authority.
The authority checks whether the new job still meets the conditions. If it does not, you may be offered another residence title, such as a permit for qualified professionals.
Plan job changes carefully in year one. Ask the authority before you sign a new contract.
The Blue Card is not the only option. The portal mentions a work visa for academic professionals under Section 18b of the Residence Act. It applies when you do not meet the Blue Card requirements.
The portal also offers advice by contact form for job search, visas and recognition. Use it if your case is unusual.
German employers like clear, factual CVs. List your degree, your tools and your results. Add your language levels honestly.
A short cover letter that names the role and explains your fit works better than a generic one. Keep each section focused on the vacancy.
German skills widen your options, even when the job language is English. They also shorten the path to settlement.
Can I get a Blue Card without a degree? Sometimes. IT specialists with three years of experience in the past seven can qualify. A three-year tertiary-level qualification can also count.
What if my salary is below the threshold? Then the Blue Card may not be possible. Ask about the Section 18b route or a higher salary offer.
How fast can I settle permanently? After 27 months with A1 German, or 21 months with B1, under the conditions the portal lists.
Can my family come? Yes. Blue Card holders can bring family, subject to the family reunification rules.
Decide whether the Blue Card fits your profile. Then search for vacancies in your field and compare the salary with the 2026 figures. Use the official portal for each step, and confirm the current numbers before you sign a contract.
Use official platforms and national authorities to verify current rules before applying or travelling.
