Training guide
A plain guide to the free back-end certification from freeCodeCamp, which the current curriculum list calls Back-End Development and APIs.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on the official freeCodeCamp announcements and curriculum list
The freeCodeCamp Back-End Development and APIs certification is the sixth on the current curriculum list. It is free and self-paced. The old page called it an “Intermediate Node.js course”. The announcement lists it as the Backend JavaScript Certification in one place and as Back-End Development and APIs in another, so you may see both names.
The detailed module outline could not be confirmed, because the course pages load with scripts. This guide therefore sticks to what freeCodeCamp states in its announcements and tells you where to check the rest.
It explains how the certification works, how to prepare and how to show the result to employers.
| Provider | freeCodeCamp, a US non-profit |
| Names in use | Back-End Development and APIs; Backend JavaScript Certification |

The back end handles data, logic and the connection between pages and a database. You need a base before you start.
freeCodeCamp places it after JavaScript, Front-End Libraries, Python and Relational Databases. That order gives you the tools that this certification builds on.
If you are new to coding, do not start here. Begin with the first certification and work forward.
The Python announcement lists this course as the Backend JavaScript Certification and links to the back-end-development-and-apis address. Other pages use Back-End Development and APIs.
Names change as the curriculum is updated. Always use the link on the official page.
Tell employers the current name, and add the year you earned it.
An API is a way for one program to ask another for data. A weather app asks a weather service for a forecast.
A back end receives requests, checks them and sends data back. It also protects data from people who should not see it.
Understanding that flow makes any course in this area easier.
Finish the Relational Databases certification first, or learn the same basics. You will meet data in every project.
Practise reading error messages. Back-end errors often show up in a terminal, not in the page.
Keep notes on commands you use. A short list saves time every week.
The exam is closed book. Notes, books and AI tools are not allowed.
You may try once a week. After a failed attempt you wait seven days.
Use a laptop or desktop. The exam app does not run on a phone.
Build a small service that returns a list of books as data. Add a way to add one book.
Add simple checks so that empty or wrong input is rejected with a clear message.
Write a short README with example requests. Another person should be able to run your project in minutes.
Never put passwords or keys in a public repository. Use environment settings instead.
Treat all input as untrusted. Check it before you store it.
Read the basic guidance on the official page of your tools, and update them regularly.
Do not skip the earlier certifications to save time. You will lose it later.
Do not copy code you cannot explain. The exam tests understanding.
Do not publish real personal data in demo projects.
Test each request with a few good and a few bad inputs. Note what happens each time.
Keep a short list of test cases in your README. A reviewer can then repeat them.
Re-read your code after a day. Fresh eyes spot unclear names.
Roles include junior back-end developer, API developer and software trainee.
Add the credential to your Europass CV and link to a project that has a clear README.
The certificate does not give a right to work. Check national rules if you need a visa.
Back-End Development and APIs, also listed as the Backend JavaScript Certification. Check the official page.

They are not a formal requirement, but the order is designed to prepare you.
freeCodeCamp describes about 300 hours per certification.
