Training guide
A plain guide to the CCNA Introduction to Networks course from Cisco Networking Academy: content, time and costs.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on Cisco Networking Academy course overviews
The CCNA Introduction to Networks course is the first of three courses in Cisco’s CCNA series. It teaches how networks work, from cables and devices to IP addresses. Many colleges and training centres teach it.
The old page called this a free course. That is not accurate for the usual version. Cisco lists it as instructor-led, and each academy sets its own fee. This guide explains what you get and how to plan.
| Provider | Cisco Networking Academy, taught by partner academies |
| Level | Entry level, no formal prerequisites |
| Delivery | Instructor-led, with online course material |
| Estimated time | About 70 hours |
| Structure | 17 modules |
| Cost | Set by the academy that teaches it. Check before you enrol. |
Cisco describes the course as a first look at the models, protocols and devices that connect users and data. You learn how a network is structured and how the internet fits in.
By the end you should be able to build a local area network, set basic options on routers and switches, and use IP addressing. The later CCNA courses build on all of this.
The course is split into 17 modules. They start with how networks work today and move through Ethernet, IPv4 and IPv6 addressing and network services.
Each module has short readings, interactive tasks and a quiz. Labs use the Cisco Packet Tracer simulator, so you can practise without buying equipment.
Cisco states that this course is taught by instructors. A college, school or training centre runs a class and guides you through the labs.
Class length varies. One college runs it over a full term, while another offers a short evening course. Ask each provider for its timetable.
There is no single price. Each academy sets its own fee for the class. Two provider pages we read showed fees in the hundreds of pounds or dollars.
Those figures are only examples and may be out of date. Ask the academy for the current fee and what it includes, such as books and exam access.
You take module quizzes and checkpoint exams as you go. A final exam closes the course. Academies using the course can issue a Certificate of Completion and a digital badge.
The course certificate is not the CCNA certification. The CCNA exam is a different test.
It suits students in IT or engineering, career changers and anyone planning a networking or support role. You do not need earlier networking study.
If you only want a gentle introduction, the free Networking Essentials course may fit better. It is a lighter path with no instructor.
The Introduction to Networks course is aligned with the CCNA 200-301 exam. It covers only the first part of what that exam tests.
Plan to continue with Switching, Routing and Wireless Essentials, then Enterprise Networking, Security and Automation. Check Cisco’s exam page for the current price and rules.
Set a weekly routine and keep it. Two or three short sessions beat one long weekend push.
Do every Packet Tracer lab yourself. Write down each command you use and what it does. Review the notes before each quiz.
Compare at least two providers. Ask about class size, lab access, exam preparation and refund rules.
Check that the academy is part of the Cisco Networking Academy. Ask whether the fee covers the digital badge.
Entry roles include network technician, IT support technician and helpdesk assistant. Employers also look at hands-on skills.
Add the course to your Europass CV with the year and the academy name. Show one small home lab you built in Packet Tracer.
Cisco lists it as instructor-led. The academy that teaches it sets the fee, so check with them.
Cisco estimates about 70 hours. Classes run for a few weeks or a full term.
No. It is an entry-level course with no formal prerequisites.
No. The course prepares you. The CCNA exam is a separate paid test.
Job titles to search for include network technician, IT support technician and helpdesk agent. Search current vacancies on the EURES portal.
Read the current details on the Cisco Networking Academy CCNA course page.
This guide is independent and is not affiliated with Cisco or the Cisco Networking Academy. Course lengths, fees and course names change, so check the official page before you enrol. A course certificate does not give you the right to work in any country.
