Training guide
A plain guide to the IBM DevOps and Software Engineering Certificate: the topics, the time it takes, who it suits and how to show your work.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on the official Coursera professional certificate page
The IBM DevOps and Software Engineering Certificate is an online programme for people who want to work in DevOps and cloud native development. IBM created it and Coursera hosts it. Its official name differs from the shorter titles used in some guides.
This guide explains what the programme covers and how long it takes. It also shows how to use it in a job search in Europe. The facts come from the Coursera page. Check that page for the latest course list.

Coursera says you develop a DevOps mindset and practise Agile and Scrum. These are the ways teams plan and deliver software.
You also learn to build applications from microservices and deploy them with containers. The page names tools such as Docker, Kubernetes and OpenShift, and also serverless technology.
DevOps joins development and operations. The goal is to release software often and safely. Teams automate testing and deployment, so that changes reach users faster.
Think of a bakery that bakes, packs and delivers in one smooth line instead of three separate shops.
Coursera suggests about 6 months at 10 hours a week. The listing shows courses from about 9 to 24 hours each. The longest one in the listing is about 24 hours.
Plan a regular schedule and expect the container and cloud material to take extra time.
Containers package an application with everything it needs. Kubernetes helps run many containers together. CI/CD pipelines run tests and deployments automatically.
You do not need to master every tool. Focus on understanding why each one exists.
Start with the Agile and Scrum material, since it sets the vocabulary. Then follow the order given.
Build a tiny application and put it in a container. Add a simple pipeline that runs a test on every change. This one project covers many topics.
Do not skip the Python course. Scripts are part of daily DevOps work.
Do not treat the programme as an ops-only course. It includes software engineering.
Do not claim cloud certifications you have not passed.
The programme suits beginners with some coding interest, IT support staff who want to move into DevOps, and developers who want deployment skills.
It may feel slow if you already run pipelines at work.
DevOps and cloud roles appear across Europe, from software companies to banks. Titles include DevOps engineer, junior site reliability engineer and cloud support engineer.
Employers often ask for version control, Linux and a cloud platform. Add your projects and a link to your code.
The certificate does not give a right to work. Check national visa rules if needed.
Plan ten hours a week. Use five for lessons, four for hands-on tasks and one for review.
Keep a simple cheat sheet of commands for the tools you use. It saves time and shows what you have learned.
Leave extra time for the container and cloud courses. They need setup and practice.
Do you want to run systems, write software, or both? The programme mixes the two.
Can you commit to six months? If not, pick one course on Agile or containers to start.
DevOps job ads often mention Linux, scripting, version control and a cloud platform. Many also name pipeline tools and containers.
The programme covers several of these. Strengthen the rest with a small personal project that you deploy and keep running.
Write a short note on what broke and how you fixed it. Employers like to hear how you solve problems.
