Training guide
A plain guide to the Meta Database Engineer Certificate: nine courses, the skills you practise, the time it takes and how to show your work.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on the official Coursera professional certificate page
The Meta Database Engineer Certificate is an online programme from Meta, hosted on Coursera. It teaches you to design, build and look after databases.
This guide explains what the programme covers and how long it takes. It also shows how to use it in a job search in Europe. The facts come from the official Coursera page, so check it for the latest course list.

Coursera says you learn to create databases from scratch and then add, manage and optimise them. The page adds that no degree or experience is required to start.
Database engineers keep an organisation’s data safe, fast and easy to query. Their work sits between software developers and analysts.
The page also names an ACE credit recommendation. Check what it means with the school you plan to use.
Coursera suggests about 6 months at 6 hours a week. Courses run from about 11 to 45 hours, with a few near 40 hours. Expect the large ones to need extra time.
The total is well over 200 hours, so a regular weekly schedule is important.
Design a small database for a topic you know, such as a library. Draw the tables on paper first. Then create them and load sample data.
Write ten queries that answer real questions. Keep them in a file with short notes on what each does.
Plan six hours a week. Use four for lessons and two for practice queries.
Redo one earlier task from memory each month. This shows what you really know.
Do not skip database design. Poor tables are hard to fix later.
Do not rely on screenshots. Keep your code and notes.
Do not call yourself an expert after one course. Say you are building skills.
Database job ads often mention SQL, data modelling and performance. Many also ask for backups and security knowledge.
Add a short note on how you would back up your sample database. It shows careful thinking.
Do you like working with structure and detail? Database work rewards careful people.
Would a shorter SQL course meet your goal? Choose the programme if you want the full path.
The programme suits beginners, IT support staff and analysts who want to work closer to the data.
It may be too long if you only need to write simple queries.
Database and data roles appear in banks, retailers and software firms across Europe. Titles include junior database engineer, database administrator and data engineer.
Add your project and a short description of the tools you used to your Europass CV.
The certificate does not give a right to work. Check national visa rules if needed.
Share your best database project with a short readme. Include a diagram of the tables and a list of the queries you wrote.
Add a note on how you would keep the data safe and how you would check that a query is fast. Even brief notes show careful thinking.
Keep the files in a public repository, and link them from your CV.
Keep practising queries on new data each week. Public sample datasets are a good source, and you can invent small questions to answer.
Start applying before you finish. Interviews often include a short SQL test, so practise writing queries on paper.
Ask a friend to review your table design. A second opinion finds weak spots.
