There is no single “European CV”

European employers do not all require the same CV format. Some vacancies accept a simple chronological CV; others may be compatible with Europass; technical employers may prefer a concise, highly targeted document. The goal is clarity, not loyalty to one template.

A good CV makes the recruiter’s job easy: what you do, what you know, where you worked, what you achieved and what languages you can use should be obvious.

When Europass is useful

Europass provides a structured way to present education, experience, skills and languages. It can be particularly useful when you want a standard European presentation or when an organisation specifically requests it. It is also helpful for candidates who need guidance on structuring their information.

When a traditional CV may be better

A vacancy with hundreds of applicants may reward brevity. A two-page targeted CV can make technical skills easier to scan than a long template. If the employer provides application instructions, follow those instructions first. Never assume that “Europass” is mandatory just because the job is in Europe.

Compare the two formats

1. Europass: structured, recognisable and useful for organising European-style information.
2. Traditional targeted CV: flexible, concise and easy to adapt to a particular employer.
3. Best choice: whichever format makes your relevant evidence clearest for the vacancy.

What matters more than the template

Use precise job titles, measurable responsibilities where genuine, relevant technical tools, language levels stated honestly and qualifications that match the vacancy. Remove old or unrelated material that pushes important evidence down the page.

For international applications, explain experience in terms that a foreign recruiter can understand. Company-specific internal abbreviations often mean little outside your workplace.

Language presentation

Use recognised language-level descriptions where you can support them. Do not inflate your level to pass an initial screen. If a job requires professional German and your German is beginner level, changing the CV wording will not solve the underlying eligibility problem. A better strategy is to target vacancies where your current language profile is realistic while improving the missing skill.

Create and review your CV
