Training guide
A plain guide to the free freeCodeCamp Python certification, which is now the main Python path on the site.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on the official freeCodeCamp announcement of 15 December 2025
The freeCodeCamp Python certification went live on 15 December 2025. It is free and teaches core Python through lessons, workshops, labs and quizzes. The old page was titled “Scientific Computing Python”. That course is not in the current main curriculum list, so this guide covers the Python certification instead.
You write code in a browser editor, so you do not need to install anything for the lessons. After five certification projects you can sit a 50-question exam.
The sections below explain how the certification is built and how to prepare for it.
| Provider | freeCodeCamp, a US non-profit |
| Launched | 15 December 2025 |
| Module quizzes | 20 multiple-choice questions, 18 correct to pass |
| Projects | Five certification projects |
| Exam | 50 questions, closed book, taken in a downloadable app |
| Cost | Free |
The older “Scientific Computing with Python” certification belonged to the earlier curriculum. The current list shows Python as one of six checkpoint certifications.
If you completed the older course and claimed it, you keep it. freeCodeCamp says claimed certifications do not become invalid.
For new learners, the Python certification is the right starting point.
The announcement names functions, loops, dictionaries, sets, classes, data structures and algorithms. It also mentions object-oriented programming, graphs and trees in its examples.
The lessons give you the theory. The workshops are guided projects, such as building a linked list.
The labs ask you to solve a problem from user stories, such as implementing the Luhn algorithm.
Every module follows the same pattern. Lessons come first, then workshops, then a lab.
A review page lists the concepts at the end. Use it to prepare for the quiz.
The quiz has 20 multiple-choice questions. You need 18 correct to pass.
After five certification projects you can take a 50-question exam. It uses an open-source exam app that you download.
The exam is closed book. You may not use notes, books, AI tools or other people.
All attempts are reviewed by staff before the results are released.
You can attempt one exam per week. After an attempt there is a 168-hour cool-down.
There is no limit on how many times you try. Use the wait to study weak areas.
You do not need to resubmit projects after a failed exam.
Run every code example yourself. Change one value and predict what happens before you run it.
Write short notes after each lesson. Explain the idea without looking at the lesson.
Practise a little every day. Python’s syntax becomes natural with repetition.
Write a program that renames files in a folder using a simple rule.
Build a budget tracker that reads a list of expenses and prints totals by category.
Create a word-frequency counter for any text file. Add a rule to ignore common words.
Put your projects in a public repository and add a README. Say what each program does.
Add the certification and the year to your CV and LinkedIn page.
Be ready to explain one project in two minutes. Interviewers often ask.
Indentation errors are the most common. Use the same number of spaces throughout.
Beginners often forget that a list starts at position zero. Test with small examples.
Read the full error message from the bottom up. The last line usually names the problem.
Pair it with Relational Databases to work with stored data.
Try a small automation task at work or at home. Real use cements the skills.
Read other people’s Python projects on GitHub. Notice how they name things.
Python is used in roles such as junior developer, data assistant, test automation trainee and IT support.
Add the credential to your Europass CV and link to your code.
The certificate does not give a right to work. Check national rules if you need a visa.
Yes. freeCodeCamp states that all of this is free.
It has 50 questions, is closed book and runs in a downloadable app.
No. You need a laptop or desktop.
Once a week, with no limit on attempts.
It is the current Python path. Older claimed certificates remain valid.
Titles to search for include junior Python developer, data assistant and test automation trainee. Search current vacancies on the EURES portal.
Read the current details on the freeCodeCamp Python Certification page.
