What EURES is

EURES is a European employment network designed to support mobility and job matching across participating European countries. Its services can include vacancy search, labour-market information, guidance and support for people considering work in another country.

EURES is useful because it gives jobseekers a public European starting point, but it should not be misunderstood as a single European immigration authority.

What EURES can and cannot do

EURES can help you find information and opportunities, but finding a vacancy through EURES does not itself grant a non-EU citizen the right to work or reside in a country. National immigration and employment rules still apply.

For non-EU applicants, this distinction is essential: job matching and immigration authorisation are separate processes.

How to search effectively

Search by occupation and location rather than only by country. Read the complete vacancy, especially language requirements and employer details. Save the vacancy reference and compare it with other information about the employer.

Use EURES alongside employer websites and national employment services instead of treating any one source as a guarantee.

Use your CV strategically

EURES has a close relationship with Europass, so a Europass CV can be a useful structured starting point. However, the best CV is the one that clearly communicates your fit for the specific vacancy. A generic CV sent unchanged to dozens of employers is usually weaker than a focused document.

A practical EURES workflow

  1. Choose one or two target occupations.
  2. Search relevant countries and regions.
  3. Read the vacancy requirements fully.
  4. Check whether your nationality/status affects work rights.
  5. Verify the employer and application route.
  6. Tailor the CV and apply.
  7. Use official national sources for immigration questions.

Why location matters

A vacancy in one country may be unsuitable for an applicant who needs sponsorship even if the occupation is in demand. Regional labour shortages, language expectations and national rules can change the practical picture. This is why country-specific research should follow the initial EURES search.

Avoid overpromising yourself

Do not write that you are “eligible to work in the EU” unless that is actually true for your status. Instead, state your nationality/status accurately and, where relevant, your willingness to relocate and complete the required work-authorisation process. Clear wording prevents confusion later.

Next steps

After searching, compare roles on EU Job Hub. For CV preparation, see the European CV Guide. For non-EU eligibility, read the Foreign Workers Guide.

2026 verification note: Employment and immigration rules can change. Use this guide to understand the job-search process, then verify work-authorisation requirements with the relevant national authority before making payments, travel plans or relocation decisions.
