European CV Guide 2026: How to Build a Strong CV for EU Jobs

A European CV guide with clear steps for structure, content, languages and tailoring your CV to each job in the EU.

Introduction

This European CV guide explains how to build a clear CV for jobs in the EU. Employers in different countries have different habits. Some things stay the same. A good CV is easy to scan, honest and matched to the job. Follow the steps below.

Choose a Simple Structure

Start with your name and contact details. Add a short profile of two or three lines. Then list your work experience, education, skills and languages. Put the most relevant items first. Keep headings clear and consistent. A reader should find your last job in a few seconds.

Use Reverse Order for Experience

List your latest job first and go back in time. For each job, give the title, the employer, the city and the dates. Add three to five short points that describe what you did. Start each point with a verb. Show results when you can, such as the size of the team or the number of customers.

Keep the Length Sensible

Most recruiters prefer a short CV. One or two pages is common for most people. Senior or academic CVs can be longer. Cut old or unrelated jobs to a line or remove them. Every line should help the reader see why you fit the job.

Write a Targeted Profile

Your profile is your summary. Name your field, your years of experience and your main strengths. Use words from the advert where they are true. Do not use empty phrases. Show facts such as your certificate or a clear skill.

Show Your Languages

Many employers ask for languages. State each language and your level. The common European scale from A1 to C2 is widely understood. Be honest, because you may be tested. The Europass CV editor includes a section for languages on this scale.

List Education and Certificates

Give the name of the qualification, the institution, the city and the year. If your qualification is from outside the EU, add a short note on its level. For regulated professions, mention that you have applied for or received recognition. Add certificates that relate to the job.

Personal Details and Local Habits

Practice differs by country. In some countries CVs often include a photo, date of birth or nationality. In others, employers prefer that you leave them out. Check what is usual in your target country. Do not include bank details or passport numbers. Include a professional email address.

Tailor Your CV for Each Job

  1. Read the advert and underline the main requirements.
  2. Match your experience to those points.
  3. Move the best matches to the top of the page.
  4. Use the same key terms, where they are true.
  5. Save a separate file for each application.

Format and File

Use a clean font and plain layout. Avoid heavy graphics, which can be hard to read on screen. Save as a PDF unless the advert asks for another type. Name the file clearly, for example with your name and the job title. Check that it opens correctly on a phone.

The Cover Letter

Many applications need a short cover letter. State the job you want, why you fit and when you can start. Keep it to a page. Use a different letter for each job. The Europass tools include a cover letter builder.

Common Mistakes

  • Spelling errors and unclear dates.
  • A CV that is too long or too dense.
  • Claiming skills or levels you cannot show.
  • Using one CV for every job.
  • Sending personal data that is not needed.

A Short Checklist

  • Clear structure and reverse order.
  • One or two pages.
  • Honest language levels.
  • A tailored profile and a short cover letter.

Example of a Strong Experience Entry

A weak entry says “responsible for customer service”. A stronger entry says what you did and what changed. For example: “Handled about 60 customer calls a day and solved most issues on the first call.” Use true figures from your own work. If you do not have numbers, describe the task clearly. Keep each point to one line where you can.

Keeping Your CV Current

Update your CV every few months, even if you are not looking for work. Add new skills, courses and results while they are fresh. Remove details that no longer help. Keep one master version with everything and create short versions from it for each job. This saves time and reduces mistakes.

Sources to Check

Use official platforms and national authorities to verify current rules before applying or travelling.
