France Jobs for Foreigners 2026: Talent Passport and Work Visa Guide

How France jobs for foreigners work for non-EU applicants: the talent passport for qualified employees, the employee-on-assignment card and where to check the current rules.

EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026

Introduction

France jobs for foreigners from outside the EU depend on the type of permit. France has several routes. Some are tied to a diploma and a salary level. Others are tied to a transfer inside a company group. This guide explains two of them using the official Service-Public site.

It does not quote salary thresholds. Those figures are updated and third-party sites give different numbers. Check the current amount on Service-Public or with the French consulate before you rely on it.

Choosing the Right Permit

The permit you need depends on your job and your background. Two common talent passport routes are the qualified employee and the employee on assignment. If your situation does not fit either one, a different permit applies. In that case, contact the French consulate in your country of residence.

Start by asking your future employer which permit they expect for your role. Then check that answer against the official page for that permit.

Talent Passport for a Qualified Employee

Service-Public describes this card as a residence card that lets you stay and work in France. Your employer does not have to ask for a separate work authorisation. You must meet two conditions:

  • You hold a diploma equal to at least a master’s degree. It can be a Specialised Master’s or Master of Science from a recognised institution.
  • You have an employment contract of more than 3 months with an annual gross salary at or above the official threshold.

The salary threshold is set by the authorities. The figure you see on an old website may be out of date. Always read the current Service-Public page.

Applying From Abroad

If you live abroad, you submit the visa application to the French consular authorities in your country of residence. What happens next depends on the length of your stay.

  • If your stay is under 12 months, the consulate issues a long-stay visa marked talent passport. After you arrive, you must have the visa validated online within 3 months.
  • If your stay is 1 year or more, the consulate issues a long-stay visa marked talent passport for 3 months. You then request your residence card online.

Applying From Inside France

If you are already in France, you apply online. Service-Public says the earliest date is 4 months before your current document expires. The latest date is 2 months before it expires. Put the dates in your calendar as soon as you arrive.

Talent Passport for an Employee on Assignment

This route is for people sent to France by a company abroad. A prefecture checklist lists the conditions. You must have entered France on a visa marked talent passport for an employee on assignment. You need an employment contract of more than 3 months with a French company in the same group as the company abroad. You must also have at least 3 months of seniority in the group or in the company abroad. The salary must meet a minimum set by law, and you must not be a threat to public order.

The card is issued for the length of the contract. It allows only the job that justified it. It can be renewed if the original assignment continues or is extended.

An Important Limit on This Route

At the end of the assignment, you cannot simply ask for a card to do a different job in France. The prefecture document says you would need to apply for a new long-stay visa from abroad. Plan for this if you hope to stay longer with another employer.

Documents to Prepare

Lists vary by permit and prefecture. Service-Public lists a valid long-stay visa or residence permit and your passport. The passport pages that matter are the civil status page, validity dates, entry stamps and visas. The employer also completes forms and provides company documents. Read the list for your exact permit and keep copies of everything.

How to Search for Jobs Safely

Use public sources. The EURES portal lists vacancies across Europe and explains living and working conditions by country. Company career pages are also reliable. Ask any employer to confirm in writing which permit they plan to use for you.

Never pay a person or agency who promises a French job or visa in return for a fee. Official visa applications go through the consulate and the authorities.

Language and Preparation

This guide does not cover language rules, because they differ by permit. Many jobs in France are still advertised in French. Even where the job is in English, daily life and paperwork are easier with some French. Plan time to learn it.

A Short Checklist

  • Identify the permit that matches your job.
  • Check the current salary threshold on Service-Public.
  • Confirm your diploma level if you apply as a qualified employee.
  • Get a contract of more than 3 months in writing.
  • Apply at the consulate in your country of residence.
  • Validate your visa or request your card on time after arrival.

Sources to Check

Use official platforms and national authorities to verify current rules before applying or travelling.
