Training guide
A plain guide to the free JavaScript certification from freeCodeCamp, which replaced the older Algorithms and Data Structures course.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on the official freeCodeCamp announcements and curriculum list
The freeCodeCamp JavaScript certification is a free course for learning the language of the web. The old page used the title “JavaScript Algorithms Data Structures”. That was the name of the earlier course. The current curriculum list calls it simply the JavaScript Certification.
The new version follows the same pattern as the rest of the curriculum. You study lessons, build workshops and labs, pass quizzes, submit projects and then sit an exam.
This guide explains what has changed and how to plan the work. It also shows how to present the result to a European employer.
| Provider | freeCodeCamp, a US non-profit |
| Current name | JavaScript Certification |
| Earlier name | JavaScript Algorithms and Data Structures |
| Format | Lessons, workshops, labs, quizzes, projects and an exam |
| Estimated work | About 300 hours, according to the announcement |
| Cost | Free |
The older course was a long list of coding challenges. The new certification adds more theory and more guided practice.
freeCodeCamp says the new coursework is more granular and more interactive. In short, you learn a concept, practise it in a workshop and then prove it in a lab.
Because the names differ, check any tutorial you find. A guide from a few years ago may describe the old course.
The curriculum list shows Responsive Web Design first and JavaScript second. Front-End Libraries comes third.
That order makes sense. Once you can build a page, you add behaviour to it.
If you already know HTML and CSS, you can start here. If not, begin with the first certification.
Type every example yourself. Copying and pasting hides the small mistakes that teach you the most.
After each lesson, write a short note in your own words. Explain the idea as if you were teaching a friend.
When code fails, read the error message slowly. Most messages tell you the line that needs attention.
Write a small function that checks whether a word is a palindrome. Then change it to ignore spaces.
Build a tip calculator that reads two numbers from a form. Show the result on the page.
Write a function that counts the words in a sentence. Test it with an empty string and with extra spaces.
Use the review pages at the end of each module. They list the concepts in one place.
Take short quizzes in your notes. Write a question on one side of a card and the answer on the other.
The exam is timed and closed book. Practise answering without looking anything up.
You may take the exam once a week. If you fail, you wait before you try again.
You do not repeat your projects after a failed attempt.
Use a laptop or desktop. The exam app does not run on phones at this time.
Create a GitHub account if you do not have one. Store each project in its own repository.
Write a README that explains what the project does and how to run it.
Pin your best three projects. Visitors see them first.
Do not rely on one tutorial only. Different explanations help an idea settle.
Do not skip debugging practice. Employers expect you to find your own errors.
Do not call it a degree. It is a free, self-study credential.
Stop and write down what you expect the code to do. Then write what it does instead.
Print values at each step to see where they change. This simple habit finds most bugs.
Ask a question in the forum after you have tried for at least thirty minutes. Include your code.
JavaScript skills fit roles such as junior web developer, front-end developer and QA automation trainee.
Add the certification to your Europass CV and link to your repositories.
The certificate does not give you a right to work. Check national rules if you need a visa.
It is the current version of the JavaScript path. The title changed and the content is more guided.
Yes. The course, the exam and the credential are free.
It helps a lot. The recommended order starts with Responsive Web Design.
freeCodeCamp describes about 300 hours of coursework.
Yes, once a week, with no limit on attempts.
Titles to search for include junior JavaScript developer, web developer and front-end trainee. Search current vacancies on the EURES portal.
Read the current details on the freeCodeCamp JavaScript Certification page.
