Training guide
A plain guide to the IBM Data Science Certificate: what the courses teach, the tools you use, how long it takes and how to show the certificate to employers in Europe.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on the official Coursera course page
The IBM Data Science Certificate is an online programme that teaches the tools and methods used by data scientists. IBM created it and Coursera hosts it. It is longer and more technical than most entry-level certificates.
This guide explains what you study and how the parts fit together. It also covers how to use the certificate in a job search in Europe. The facts come from the Coursera course page and partner listings. Check the official page for the current number of courses, because listings show both 10 and 12.
| Provider | IBM, delivered on Coursera |
| Format | Professional Certificate, 12 courses on the current page |
| Suggested pace | About 10 hours a week for 4 months |
| Main tools | Python, SQL, R, Jupyter notebooks and RStudio |
| Credential | Shareable certificate from IBM |
| Cost | Included with Coursera Plus. Check current prices. |
The first course is Tools for Data Science. Coursera lists it at about 11 to 12 hours. It introduces the languages and platforms you will use. The second course, at about 16 to 17 hours, covers the languages data scientists rely on, such as Python, R and SQL. You also learn to work in Jupyter notebooks and RStudio.
The next courses teach Python in more depth. You work with data structures and with libraries such as Pandas and NumPy. A later course asks you to build a dashboard using Python and libraries such as Pandas, Beautiful Soup and Plotly.
Another course, at about 18 hours, focuses on databases. You analyse data inside a database using SQL and Python. The later courses move on to applying what you have learned. Coursera lists several of them at 17 to 20 hours each.
Python is the main language. You use it to clean data, run calculations and build charts.
SQL lets you pull data out of databases. The course teaches you to query from both SQL itself and from Python.
Jupyter notebooks mix code, results and notes on one page. RStudio is a workspace for the R language. The course asks you to show working knowledge of both.
Pandas handles tables of data. Plotly draws interactive charts. Together they let you turn a raw file into a dashboard.
Coursera suggests four months at 10 hours a week. Some listings show five months, which matches the older 10-course version. The total runs to well over 100 hours once you add up the courses.
Because the programme has many courses, the pace matters. Steady weekly hours work better than occasional long sessions.
Learning by building is the point of the programme. The dashboard project is the clearest example. You collect data, organise it with Pandas, and show the results in charts that a reader can explore. You also run SQL queries against a real database and write the results into a notebook.
Keep each notebook tidy. Add short notes that explain what you did and why. A recruiter who opens your folder should understand a project in two minutes without asking you a question.
Treat the later courses the same way. Each one gives you another piece of work to add to your collection.
The programme suits people who want a broad introduction to data science. Career changers, graduates of other subjects and analysts who want to learn Python can all benefit. You do not need to be a programmer first, but you should be comfortable learning by doing.
It may be too long for someone who only needs a quick SQL refresher.
Data roles in Europe often ask for Python and SQL. The certificate gives you a course record for both. Employers will still want to see projects, so keep your dashboard and notebooks in a public folder.
A certificate does not give you the right to work in any country. If you need a visa, check the national rules.
Titles to search for include junior data scientist, data analyst and machine learning assistant.
The current Coursera page lists 12. Older listings show 10.
