Europe Job Relocation Checklist 2026: From Offer to First Month

A Europe job relocation checklist covering the contract, permit, housing, registration and the first month after you arrive.

Introduction

A Europe job relocation checklist keeps you organised during a big change. Many tasks depend on each other. A permit may be needed before you can book travel. Registration may be needed before you can open a bank account. This guide puts the tasks in order.

Rules are national and change. The examples below come from official pages. Always check the authority in your destination country.

Before You Accept the Offer

Read the contract carefully. Check the job title, place of work, start date and pay basis. Check working hours and leave. Check the notice period. Ask how the employer will support your permit, if you need one. Keep a signed copy.

Permit and Entry

EU and EEA citizens generally can live and work in another EU country. Others usually need a permit. The permit may come before you travel or after you arrive. In Finland, the Finnish Immigration Service says you must have confirmed employment before you apply for the employed person permit. In France, Service-Public says a long-stay visa for a talent passport for a stay of under 12 months must be validated online within 3 months of arrival.

These examples show that each country has its own steps. Put your deadlines in a calendar.

Documents to Pack

  • Passport and any visa or permit.
  • Contract and employer letter.
  • Diplomas and translated copies, if needed.
  • Birth and marriage certificates, if you bring family.
  • Vaccination and medical records.
  • Passport photos.

Housing

Find temporary housing for the first weeks. Then search for a longer rental. Do not send a deposit before you have a written agreement. Do not send money to someone you have not met or verified. Ask the employer if they can suggest safe options.

Registration After Arrival

Many countries require you to register your address. In Finland, the Finnish Immigration Service refers to registration of a foreigner’s personal data in the Population Information System. Other countries have similar rules and deadlines. Ask your employer or the local authority what applies. Registration often unlocks other services.

Health Insurance

Check how you will be covered on day one. Some systems link coverage to employment and registration. Others need a private plan at first. Keep your insurance papers with you. Learn how to see a doctor before you need one.

Bank Account and Tax Number

Employers usually need a local bank account for pay. Some banks need proof of address. Others accept a contract. Ask which documents each bank requires. Also check whether you need a tax number, and how to get one.

Your First Month

  1. Complete any deadline for validating your permit or registering.
  2. Open a bank account and give the details to your employer.
  3. Check your first payslip against the contract.
  4. Learn your route to work and the transport rules.
  5. Save emergency numbers and the address of your embassy.
  6. Find a longer-term home if you started in temporary housing.

A Short Checklist

  • Sign the contract and keep a copy.
  • Secure your permit and note each deadline.
  • Arrange housing and insurance.
  • Register and open a bank account.

Moving With Family

If family members move with you, start earlier. Check whether each person needs a permit, and whether they may work. Children need school places, and some systems have deadlines. Gather birth and marriage certificates. You may need certified translations. Ask the employer if they can help with school or childcare information.

Staying in Touch With Home Authorities

Tell your bank, insurer and tax office that you are moving. Ask how to handle pension, tax residency and voting. Forward your mail or arrange for a trusted person to collect it. Keep copies of your home documents in digital form. Check when your passport expires, because renewing it abroad can be slow.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Sending rent deposits before seeing the home or signing an agreement.
  • Missing a registration or validation deadline.
  • Leaving your current job before the permit is approved.
  • Carrying all originals in one bag.

Keeping Your Records Safe

Scan your key papers and store them in a secure cloud folder. Keep paper copies in a separate bag. Write down the phone numbers of your employer, your landlord and your embassy. Save the address of the nearest hospital. These small steps can save hours if a document is lost.

Sources to Check

Use official platforms and national authorities to verify current rules before applying or travelling.
