Training guide
A guide to Cisco Cybersecurity Essentials from Cisco Networking Academy: content, level, time and the newer career path.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on Cisco Networking Academy course pages
Cisco Cybersecurity Essentials is a 30-hour course on the basics of defending networks. It is part of Cisco Networking Academy and it suits people who already know a little about security.
The old title called it a free 30-hour course. The hours match Cisco’s page, but Cisco now says this self-paced course was refreshed. In English, Spanish, Portuguese and French it is called the Junior Cybersecurity Analyst Career Path.
| Provider | Cisco Networking Academy |
| Level | Intermediate, as listed by Cisco |
| Estimated time | About 30 hours |
| Recommended before | Introduction to Cybersecurity or similar knowledge |
| Newer version | Junior Cybersecurity Analyst Career Path on Skills for All, in four languages |
| Cost | Check the current course page for the fee |
The course explains the basics of cybercrime, security principles and the technologies used to defend networks. It also covers the procedures that organisations follow.
You learn how confidentiality, integrity and availability apply to data. You also learn why laws related to cybersecurity matter.
Course descriptions mention security controls for networks, servers and applications. You learn to write compliant security policies.
Practice uses Cisco Packet Tracer and other activities. Quizzes give feedback as you go.
Cisco’s page says the self-paced course has been refreshed for English, Spanish, Portuguese and French. Learners are redirected to the Junior Cybersecurity Analyst Career Path.
A review of that path lists about 120 hours across six courses. It begins with Introduction to Cybersecurity. Check the live page for today’s structure.
Cisco’s course pages note that self-paced classes on NetAcad are free for some courses. Instructor-led classes charge fees set by the institution.
University short courses based on this material charge several hundred dollars. Check which version you are joining.
It suits learners who want a step beyond the introduction. It also suits those planning to study CCNA or CyberOps later.
If you are new to IT, take the introduction first.
Do a little each day. Thirty hours spreads over four weeks at about seven hours a week.
Make flash notes for key terms. Review them before each quiz.
Entry roles include IT support with a security focus, junior analyst and security awareness assistant.
List the course and the year on your Europass CV.
Week one covers the nature of cybercrime and the main security principles. Week two looks at technologies that protect networks. Week three covers policies and laws. Week four is for review and the final exam.
Adjust the plan if you study more slowly. Steady progress matters more than speed.
Do not skip the introduction course if you are new. The essentials course moves faster.
Do not treat a certificate of completion as a professional security certification. They are different things.
Do not assume the course page looks the same in every language. Check which version you are joining.
Learners often continue with CyberOps Associate, the CCNA courses or the Ethical Hacker course. Pick the next step that matches the job you want.
If you want a SOC role, CyberOps Associate is the closer match. If you want networking, start with Introduction to Networks.
Save your completion certificate and add it to your Europass CV. Note the course version and the year.
Write two sentences about what you learned. Use them in a cover letter.
Thirty hours is not long, but the topics are dense. Study in sessions of about ninety minutes.
Leave one day between sessions to let ideas settle. Then recap the last session in five minutes before you begin the next.
Which version am I joining, the original course or the career path? Check the hours and the module list.
Do I want a free self-paced class or an instructor-led one? Fees differ.
Cisco notes that self-paced classes on NetAcad are free for some courses. Instructor-led versions may charge. Check the page.
Cisco lists 30 hours.
Cisco recommends Introduction to Cybersecurity or equal knowledge.
Cisco says it was refreshed as the Junior Cybersecurity Analyst Career Path in four languages.
Job titles to search for include junior security analyst, IT support technician and security awareness assistant. Search current vacancies on the EURES portal.
