Training guide
A guide to the Cisco Introduction to Cybersecurity course: what it teaches, how long it takes and why listings differ.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on Cisco Networking Academy course pages and academy listings
Cisco Introduction to Cybersecurity is one of the best known beginner courses from Cisco Networking Academy. It explains cyber threats and how to protect yourself and your organisation. No technical background is needed.
The old page said the course takes 15 hours. That figure appears on many academy listings of older versions. A review of the newer Junior Cybersecurity Analyst path lists the same course at 6 hours. This guide explains both.
| Provider | Cisco Networking Academy |
| Level | Beginner, no prerequisites |
| Delivery | Self-paced online, with an instructor-led option at some academies |
| Length | 15 hours on older listings. The newer path lists 6 hours. |
| Award | A Networking Academy badge on completion |
| Cost | Free for self-paced learners on NetAcad, according to Cisco listings |
The course explores cyber trends and threats. It shows how to protect your personal privacy online and why more IT jobs now need security awareness.
You also learn what challenges companies and public bodies face. The aim is to help you decide whether cybersecurity is a career you want.
Academy pages for versions 2.10 to 2.13 state 15 hours. Those are older course versions run by libraries, universities and colleges.
A recent review of Cisco’s Junior Cybersecurity Analyst path lists the introduction course at 6 hours. Cisco may have shortened it in the refresh. Check the live page and plan with the number it shows.
You can take the course by yourself at your own speed. Some universities and libraries also run it with an instructor.
Cisco notes that self-paced classes on NetAcad are free. Fees for instructor-led classes depend on the institution.
Listings state that you earn a Networking Academy badge for completing the course. Add the badge link to your professional profile.
A badge shows you finished a short course. It is not a professional security certification.
It suits school leavers, career changers and anyone who wants safer habits online. It is also a good test before a longer course.
If you decide to continue, the next step is Cybersecurity Essentials, then CyberOps Associate.
Treat it as a short project. Finish in one or two weeks and write a one-page summary of what you learned.
Apply the tips at once. Change weak passwords, switch on two-step sign-in and update your devices.
Do not rush the quizzes. They show which topics you misunderstood.
Do not assume a short course makes you a security expert. It gives a foundation.
Do not forget to save your badge link before the course window closes.
Move to Networking Basics or Cybersecurity Essentials if you want to go deeper. Choose by the job you want.
For a security operations career, aim for CyberOps Associate after you have networking basics.
Entry roles include IT support, helpdesk and security awareness assistant. Employers like to see short, relevant courses.
List the course and the year on your Europass CV. Add one line on a security habit you improved.
Save a screenshot of your completion page and your badge link. Keep a note of the version number of the course you took.
Record the date. Course versions change, and the date helps you explain what you studied.
Do I want a quick overview or a full career path? This course is short, while the path is longer.
Do I want a free self-paced class or an instructor-led one? Self-paced is listed as free.
Which version am I joining? Check the hours on the page.
Use a different password for every account and keep them in a password manager. Switch on two-step sign-in wherever it is offered.
Keep your phone and computer updated. Be careful with links in messages, even from people you know.
Cisco notes that self-paced classes on NetAcad are free. Instructor-led classes may have a fee.
Older listings show 15 hours. A newer path lists 6 hours. Check the live page.
