Training guide
A plain guide to the Meta Back-End Developer Certificate: nine courses, the skills you practise, the time it takes and how to show your work.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on the official Coursera professional certificate page
The Meta Back-End Developer Certificate is an online programme from Meta, hosted on Coursera. It aims to prepare beginners for a first back-end developer role.
This guide explains what the programme covers and how long it takes. It also shows how to use it in a job search in Europe. The facts come from the official Coursera page, so check it for the latest course list.

Coursera says you learn programming systems including Python syntax, Linux commands, Git and version control, SQL, cloud hosting, APIs, JSON and XML. The aim is to use code with confidence to solve problems.
Back-end developers build the parts of an application that users never see. They store data, apply rules and answer requests from the front end.
The page also notes an ACE credit recommendation. Check the page for how credit works, because it depends on the school.
Coursera suggests about 8 months at 6 hours a week. The listing shows course lengths from about 11 to 45 hours. Two courses are listed at about 45 hours each, so expect those to take the longest.
Add them up and the total is well over 200 hours. A steady routine matters more than speed.
Practise each concept in a small project. For example, build a simple service that stores and returns notes. Then add a second table and a link between the two.
Use Git from the first day. Commit often, with short messages that explain each change. A recruiter can read your history and see how you work.
Plan six hours a week. Use four for lessons and two for coding. Keep a short log of what you built.
Review earlier material every few weeks. Programming skills fade quickly without practice.
Do not skip the Linux and Git lessons. They are used in every real project.
Do not copy code you do not understand. Interviews often ask you to explain it.
Do not describe yourself as a senior developer after the course.
Back-end job ads often mention a programming language, SQL, version control and APIs. Many also ask for testing and clear documentation.
The programme covers the core of these. Add a short readme to each project to show that you can explain your work.
Do you want to build the logic behind applications rather than the screens? Back-end work is less visual.
Can you give six hours every week for eight months? If not, plan a longer timeline.
The programme suits beginners and career changers who like logic and data. It also suits front-end developers who want to understand servers.
It may be too long if you only need one skill, such as SQL.
Back-end roles appear in software companies, banks and agencies across Europe. Titles include junior back-end developer, API developer and software engineer.
Many employers ask for a portfolio and English. Add your projects and a code link to your Europass CV.
The certificate does not give a right to work. Check the national rules if you need a visa.
Pick two or three projects and polish them. A small, clear project is better than many unfinished ones. For each, write a readme with the goal, the tools and how to run it.
Add one short note on a problem you hit and how you solved it. Hiring managers like to see how you think when something breaks.
Keep your public profile tidy. Remove old experiments that do not reflect your best work.
