Training guide
A plain guide to the free Relational Databases certification: what it covers, how the exam works and how to show your skills.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on the official freeCodeCamp announcements and course pages
The freeCodeCamp Relational Databases certification teaches you to store and query data with SQL. It is free and you work in your browser. The old page called it an “Intermediate SQL and database course” in a vague way, so this guide describes how the real programme works.
It is the fifth certification on freeCodeCamp’s recommended list. It comes after Python and before Back-End Development and APIs. That order suits learners who want to build full applications.
Below you will find the structure, the exam rules and a plan for turning the course into evidence you can show.
| Provider | freeCodeCamp, a US non-profit |
| Subject | Relational databases and SQL |
| Format | Lessons, workshops, labs, quizzes, projects and an exam |
| Estimated work | About 300 hours, according to the announcement |
| Cost | Free |
| Place in the path | Fifth of six checkpoint certifications |
Almost every business application stores data. Orders, customers and messages all live in tables.
Someone who can design a table and write a clear query is useful in many teams.
That is why the database certification is often called practical. It teaches a skill that employers use every day.
Third-party reviews describe PostgreSQL, Bash scripting and Git as the main tools. They also mention SQL for creating and changing tables.
The freeCodeCamp curriculum outline can change. Open the official page and read the module list before you commit.
The lessons run in the browser, so you can start without a local setup.
Each module has lessons, workshops, labs, review pages and quizzes. You need to pass every quiz to qualify for the exam.
Throughout the certification you finish required projects. The announcement describes this for all six checkpoint certifications.
After you submit a project, you never need to repeat it, even if you fail the exam.
The exam is closed book. Notes, books and AI tools are not allowed.
You may attempt it once every seven days. There is no limit on the number of attempts.
You need a laptop or desktop to run the exam app.
Invent a small shop. Create tables for products, customers and orders.
Write queries that answer questions, such as which product sold most last month.
Add a new column and fill it. Then undo the change. You learn how careful updates must be.
Give each table one clear purpose. Avoid putting everything in one large table.
Use clear names for tables and columns. A stranger should understand them.
Think about links between tables before you write any code.
Save your scripts in a public repository. Add a short README that explains the data and the questions.
Describe one tricky query in plain words. It shows that you can explain, not just copy.
Keep sample data small and made up. Never publish real personal data.
Do not memorise queries without understanding them. The exam asks about ideas.
Do not skip Git. Teams expect you to track changes.
Do not treat it as a job guarantee. It proves a skill, not a hire.
Make a small library database. Use tables for books, members and loans.
Write a query to list loans overdue by more than two weeks. Write another to count loans per member.
Change the design once, such as adding a genre table, and rewrite one query.
Can I explain the difference between a primary key and a foreign key in my own words?
Can I write a query that joins two tables and filters the result?
Can I describe what happens if I delete a row that other rows depend on?
Roles that use these skills include junior data analyst, database assistant and back-end trainee.
Add the credential to your Europass CV and link to your repository.
The certificate does not give a right to work. Check national rules if you need a visa.
Yes. The course, exam and credential are free.
Third-party guides mention PostgreSQL. Check the official outline for the current tools.
It follows Python in the list, but you can read the outline and decide.
freeCodeCamp describes about 300 hours for each certification.
No. Employers hire on skills, projects and the local market.
Titles to search for include junior data analyst, database assistant and back-end trainee. Search current vacancies on the EURES portal.
Read the current details on the freeCodeCamp Relational Databases page.
This guide is independent and is not affiliated with the course provider. Prices, course lists and exam rules change, so check the official page before you enrol. A certificate does not give you the right to work in any country.
