Training guide
A plain guide to freeCodeCamp’s free full-stack path. It is a self-paced curriculum, not a bootcamp.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on the official freeCodeCamp announcements and homepage
The old page called this course a “Full Stack Development Bootcamp”. That name is misleading. The freeCodeCamp Certified Full-Stack Developer curriculum is free and self-paced. There are no live classes, no cohort and no fees.
In 2025 freeCodeCamp split the coursework into smaller certifications. Each one has an exam. Together they lead towards the full-stack credential.
This guide explains the structure, the time you need and how to present the result honestly to an employer.
| Provider | freeCodeCamp, a US non-profit |
| Type | Free self-paced curriculum, not a bootcamp |
| Parts | Six checkpoint certifications plus the full-stack capstone |
| Estimated work | About 300 hours for each checkpoint certification |
| Cost | Free |
| Exam | Closed book, taken in a downloadable app |
A bootcamp usually means a paid, time-limited programme with live teaching. freeCodeCamp offers none of that.
You study at your own pace, in your browser, with automatic tests. Support comes from the community forum.
Calling it a bootcamp on a CV may confuse employers. Use the real name.
The announcement lists six certifications: Responsive Web Design, JavaScript, Front-End Libraries, Python, Relational Databases and Back-End Development and APIs.
Each requires certification projects and an exam. The announcement says each involves around 300 hours of coursework.
As you earn them, you progress towards the capstone certification.
Six certifications at about 300 hours each is roughly 1,800 hours. Faster learners with experience will need less.
At ten hours a week, that is more than three years. At twenty hours a week, it is about a year and a half.
Plan for the long term. Use the early certifications to look for junior work while you continue.
The announcement says the old Full-Stack Developer button would stay on the learn page for a short time. Over the following months it was expected to disappear.
The coursework was copied into the new, smaller certifications. Your saved progress should carry over.
Check the learn page for the current layout before you start.
Exams run in an open-source app that you download. The announcement says it respects privacy and does not record your webcam or microphone.
Exams are closed book and timed. Staff review every passing attempt before the result is released.
You get one attempt a week. There is no limit on attempts.
Follow the recommended order. Begin with web pages, then JavaScript, then libraries.
Use Python and databases to add data skills. End with the back-end certification.
Take a break between certifications to build a project of your own.
Write “freeCodeCamp Certified Full-Stack Developer curriculum” and state which certifications you have earned.
List each certification with the year. A short, honest list is easier to trust.
Link to your repositories, so a reader can judge your code.
Do not rush for speed. The exam tests recall, so shallow study fails.
Do not copy answers from the forum. Use it to ask good questions.
Do not wait for the full path before you apply for work.
Break the path into milestones. Celebrate each certification you earn.
Keep a log of projects with the date and a link. Seeing it grow helps on hard weeks.
Join the forum or a local study group. A fixed meeting with others keeps you going.
Apply for junior roles after your first two or three certifications. Employers do not wait for a full path.
Contribute a small fix to an open-source project. It shows teamwork and code reading.
Keep your CV short and update it after each certification.
Full-stack skills fit roles such as web developer, junior software engineer and developer trainee.
Add each earned certification to your Europass CV and link to your best projects.
The credential does not give a right to work. Check national rules if you need a visa.
