freeCodeCamp Responsive Web Design Certification: Course Guide

A plain guide to the free Responsive Web Design certification: the new exam-based version, the legacy version and how to show your work.

EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on the official freeCodeCamp announcements and course pages

Introduction

The freeCodeCamp Responsive Web Design certification teaches HTML and CSS through browser-based lessons and projects. It is free. It is also the first certification freeCodeCamp recommends for people who are new to coding.

There are two versions. The newer one adds more theory, more practice and an exam. The older legacy version stays available, and anyone who already claimed it keeps it.

This guide explains the difference. It also shows how to turn the course into a small portfolio that an employer can read.

Key Points at a Glance

New Version and Legacy Version

The official announcement says the new certification has more theory and practice than the old one. It also adds an exam.

If you already hold the legacy certificate, it stays yours. The announcement says that a claimed certification is yours to keep.

You may still take the new version as a refresher. Beginners should start with the new one.

What You Study

The course covers the languages that browsers read. HTML gives a page its content. CSS controls how it looks.

Third-party guides also list Flexbox, Grid and accessibility as parts of the topic. Read the current outline on the official page before you plan your time.

You write code in the browser, so you can start on any computer.

How Each Module Works

Each module has lessons, workshops, labs, review pages and quizzes. The lessons introduce an idea. The workshops let you practise it step by step.

The labs ask you to build something from a list of user stories. Automatic tests check your work.

The review pages are a good study sheet for the quizzes.

The Exam

The exam is closed book. You may not use notes or other people.

You may try once a week. If you fail, you wait a week and try again.

The exam app must run on a laptop or desktop.

Build a Small Portfolio

Publish your projects in a public repository. Use a short, clear name for each one.

Add a README to each project. Say what the page does and which skills it shows.

Check every page on a phone and a laptop. A responsive page should work on both.

Test Your Pages for Accessibility

Use a keyboard to move through your page. Make sure every link and button can be reached.

Check the contrast between text and background. Low contrast makes text hard to read.

Write meaningful text for every image. Screen reader users depend on it.

Study Habits That Help

Code every day, even for twenty minutes. Short sessions keep the syntax fresh.

Rebuild one old project from memory each month. It shows what you really remember.

Ask for feedback in the freeCodeCamp forum. Describe what you tried before you ask.

Next Steps After This Certification

freeCodeCamp lists JavaScript next. It is the natural step after you can build a static page.

If you prefer design, practise with a real brief. Rebuild a page you like using your own code.

Keep your first projects public. You can improve them later.

Choosing Projects for a Beginner Portfolio

Build a personal page, a simple menu for a café and a tribute page for someone you admire.

Each one should use a different layout idea. Variety shows range.

Limit yourself to three or four polished pages. Quality beats quantity.

Reading Other People’s Code

Open the source of a simple site in your browser. Find the heading and the main menu.

Try to recreate one small part from memory. It trains your eye.

Never copy a whole site. Learn from structure, then write your own.

Using It in Europe

Entry roles include junior web developer, web designer and email developer. Many small firms hire freelancers for simple sites.

Put the credential on your Europass CV, with a link to your best three pages.

The certificate does not give a right to work. Check national rules if you need a visa.
