Training guide
A plain guide to the IBM Cybersecurity Analyst Certificate: 14 courses, the skills you practise, the time it takes and how to use it in a job search.
EU Job Hub Editorial Team · Updated 1 October 2026 · Based on the official Coursera professional certificate page
The IBM Cybersecurity Analyst Certificate is an online programme for people who want an entry-level security job. IBM created it and Coursera hosts it. The course page says it builds job-ready skills and prepares you for the CompTIA Security+ exam.
This guide explains how the programme is organised and what you practise. It also covers the time needed and how to show the certificate to employers in Europe. Course lists change, so check the official page before you enrol.

Coursera lists several goals. You learn cybersecurity basics and how to manage database vulnerabilities in operating systems administration and security.
You also learn tools and techniques for penetration testing, incident response and forensics. A newer goal is using generative AI to work faster as an analyst.
Earlier versions of the page described an eight-course programme with a focus on SIEM and endpoint protection. The current page is longer, so older reviews may not match.
Coursera suggests about 4 months at 10 hours a week. Individual courses range from roughly 8 to 15 hours in the listing.
That adds up to well over 100 hours across 14 courses. Plan a steady weekly routine rather than rare long sessions.
The course page says the programme prepares you for the CompTIA Security+ exam. Preparing is not the same as passing. Security+ is a separate exam with its own fee, run by CompTIA.
Read the CompTIA exam objectives and compare them with each course. Fill any gaps with extra practice questions.
Security work is practical. Use the labs seriously. Write down each tool you used and what it did.
Create a small home lab if you can. Run a vulnerability scan on a test machine you own. Write a one-page report that explains the findings in plain language.
Study in order, since later courses assume earlier ones. Keep a notebook with one page per course. List the key terms and one example for each.
After each course, write three questions you could be asked in an interview. Answer them aloud. This habit turns course knowledge into interview answers.
Do not treat the certificate as a job guarantee. It shows study and practice. Employers also look at projects and communication.
Do not skip the incident response material. Analysts spend much of their day reading alerts and writing notes.
Do not claim Security+ unless you have passed that exam.
The programme suits career changers, IT support staff and graduates who want to enter security. You do not need a degree, but you should be comfortable learning technical topics.
It may be too long if you only need a short refresher on one topic.
Security analyst roles appear in banks, consultancies and public bodies across Europe. Typical titles include junior security analyst, SOC analyst and IT security assistant.
Employers often ask for English, teamwork and a clear grasp of the basics. Add the certificate to your Europass CV with a short list of tools you used.
Some security roles need background checks or national clearance. Check the vacancy for details.
Split your ten weekly hours into three blocks. Use two blocks for video lessons and reading. Use the third for labs and notes.
Keep one short session each week to review old terms. Security vocabulary is large, and repeating it keeps it fresh.
Before you start, check that your computer can run the lab tools. Sort out any access problems in the first week, not the last.
Do you want a security career, or only a taste of the field? A single course can answer that more cheaply.
Can you give about ten hours every week for four months? If not, plan a longer timeline.
The current Coursera page lists 14. Older pages showed 8.
